Allen - Blog 10

Pathé Foundation designed by Renzo Piano is a glass and metal skinned structure that resembles a greenhouse.  The building houses the Fondation Jerôme Seydoux-Pathé headquarters which is an orginization dedicated to preserving the history of cinematographic art.  Which explains the location which once housed a theatre that was transformed into one of the very first cinemas.

The architect describes the challenge of the implementation of a his radical design: "The art of inserting a building into an historical city block means engaging in an open, physical dialogue with those already there. Building onto an extant structure also presents an opportunity for a more widespread renovation project, a reclaiming of space. The new headquarters of the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé is an unexpected presence, a curved volume one glimpses floating in the middle of the courtyard in which it sits, anchored on just a few supports. On the ground, there is a stand of birch trees, a floral island set in the dense mineral context of the city."

Curved volume? or perhaps greenhouse slug, or maybe a stuck glass armadillo?

The use of natural light throughout the structure is easily understood since the exterior in its entirety is made of glass.

This also leads to some interesting effects at night with an ambient glow emitting from the inside (perhaps its a glass glowworm).
