Alcatraz
San Francisco Bay, California
Of course growing up in California I've taken a field trip or 2 to Alcatraz. Once a well known penitentiary this island holds what remains of a dark past. Taking a ferry across the frigid choppy waters of the bay, one is left to imagine "how could anyone swim this?"
The building has been out of commission for years now and open for visitors. The tours allows for visitors to get an idea of the daily life of prisoners and how the building once functioned as a fortress to keep the absolute worse away the the rest of the world. It's grim walls made an impression on me from a young age and the structure itself in an important piece of California history.
