Filippo Brunelleschi was born in Florence, Italy in 1377. He was one of the most famous architects for his development of the linear perspective. In addition to his famous developments Brunelleschi is mostly known for his creation of the infamous dome on top of the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral in Florence, Italy.
This Cathedral has the largest brick dome in the world and people consider it one of the masterpieces of European architecture. This structure was completed in 1436 with many years of planning this magnificent dome. After a few architects attempted and failed to create a dome, Brunelleschi planned the dome that you see. Using over 4 million bricks, Brunelleschi created this 375 foot tall dome atop the cathedral. My first opinion of this Cathedral was that it was beautifully unique. I have not seen a cathedral shaped like the Santa Maria del Fiore before and the brick dome is a masterpiece in my eyes! It is hard to grasp how they created such large structure in the 14th and 15th centuries.
