Edinburgh Castle
I've seen New York skyscrapers, the Sistine Chapel, and the Roman Coliseum; however, none of those are as imposing as a European medieval castle. While civilizations built great structures for entertainment, industry, and worship, castles were built for one reason, war. Edinburgh Castle, built on a derelict volcano in Scotland, was besieged at least 26 times in its 1100 year history. Today, it still stands as a symbol for Scotland (and tourist attraction).

This is by far my favorite architecture. To me there is nothing more impressive than a stone structure that has survived multiple conflicts, each time being rebuilt stronger than before.

Scotland is a very grey country and the stone walls blend perfectly into the skyline from the bottom of the hill. I like its complexity through its simple design.
