Rivera- 3

Here is yet another post about European architecture. I can't help it, I love Europe and it's history!

This one is a collection of structures- windmills- in the Netherlands. They are the Windmills at Kinderdijk. When I was 16, I went to Europe for 3 weeks and this was one of my favorite stops. There are 19 windmills built in the 1730s to keep water out of the area (Netherlands is below sea-level) and they are one of the country's most famous attractions. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Like I've mentioned in my last blogs, my love of history has a huge part in what architecture impacts me. I rented a bike (the only way to go when you're in Holland) and rode the path through the windmills. It was raining, but the landscape was so beautiful and the windmills so preserved that it was easy to feel like I had been transported hundreds of years back in time.

I really appreciate the way things were built way back when. Buildings were unique and the architects put effort into making buildings that would stand the test of time. Although not all of the windmills are still in use today, they are unique because of their "Dutch" style.
