Lake Shore Drive Apartment

In 1938, Mies Van Der Rohe became American citizen and continued to teach and design many influential buildings in the United States. One of his significant structures was  the Lake Shore Drive Apartment which was completed in 1951 in Chicago, Illinois. Also known as Glass House apartment, Mies Van Der Rohe created the world’s first steel and glass apartment. This building at some point had the community questioned his less is more principle because of the cost and function of the I-beam mullions that he used to frame the structures. However, Rohe explained that the mullions in his designs are the representation of the logical strength of the structure.
