The Louvre: Glass Pyramid by I.M. Pei

The Louvre in Paris, France is a very well known tourist hot spot. The museum has been in movies and has a huge variety of famous artworks inside. I.M. Pei was the architect for the glass pyramid and the assigned architect for my class this semester. He built it because the Louvre was needing to modernize along with constructing a better entrance for visitors. After I.M. Pei built this three story pyramid in 1989, a lot of people were outraged by it. However, it only took time to cool the nerves and today the glass pyramid symbolizes the Louvre and is loved by many.

I personally, have always loved the look of the glass pyramid and have wanted to go see it. However, I do understand why, at first, the pyramid would be upsetting. The modern style doesn't quite match the old french style of the original Louvre. But after seeing how much of an icon it has become for the Louvre, it now can't be separated. It mixes in the new with the old. Since, the pyramid is made of glass, it also doesn't completely block the view of the original part of the museum either. I think that it was very tasteful of I.M. Pei.
