Moser-3 ChurchOfLight

Church Of Light

The Church of Light in definitely one of the more famous buildings by Tadao Ando.  This building is modest yet beautiful, the walls seem to flow giving what I think to be a natural appearance. When first looking at this building, the interior seemed “cold and dark” with it reinforces concrete walls and lack of windows. When I envision a Christian church I usually envision giant deco windows letting various colored light in, beautiful carvings, beauty infused everywhere from top to bottom, yet these walls are empty.
As I continued to read more, what was once a “cold” building, now made sense and seems perfect.

The intersection of light and solid raises the occupants awareness of the spiritual and secular within themselves” (Andrew Kroll).

Tadao Ando deliberately designed the walls to be void of lavish stain glass windows and decorative markings of any sort to get rid of all the distractions.  It reminds me of mediation; clearing the mind, focusing, escaping the stresses of everyday life and being one with nature.
