Emanuel Blog 16


After the construction of the famous dome atop of the Florence Cathedral, Filippo Brunelleschi decided he wanted the addition of a lantern and place it on top of the brick dome. This lantern was a huge feat in European architecture being that the dome was already the largest brick dome built in Europe and now it would have to withstand the weight of the solid lantern as well. I think the lantern is a beautiful piece of architecture that encompasses the exterior or facade of the Cathedral that was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio. 
I think the lantern replicated some of the unique intricacy that is shown by Cambio on the facade of the cathedral. However, in a seemingly Brunelleschi fashion he channels the more neutral tones for the lantern compared to the harsh contrasts of the facade above.
