Perhaps Eero Saarinen's crowning achievement, the Gateway Arch is one of the most recognizable structures in the United States. Completed in 1965, the arch symbolizes the national expansion after the Louisiana purchase. It follows in the same style as the rest of Saarinen's works, with a simple yet sleek and elegant design. The arch towers over its surroundings, lit up brightly and visible from miles away. It is one of the most significant monuments in the nation, as it is the tallest of the group and has drawn millions of visitors- including myself. Traveling to the top was one of the most memorable, yep frightening, moments of my young life. The arch seems to sway in the wind but the view is truly breathtaking.
