Entrance of Ingalls Rink

An example of the inverted catenary form common to many of Eero Saarinen's works, the David S. Ingalls Rink, colloquially known as The Whale, has a unique and eye-catching form. The two curves cause the building to seem to soar, maintaining a vaulted and raised interior with a central support arch. The building itself is a masterpiece of structural engineering, employing a unique and innovative system to provide its signature shape. While simply surfaced and textured, the overall form of the building is warm and engaging, drawing fans of both hockey and architecture to its home at Yale University.
