In October 2009 construction began on the Devon Energy Center in downtown Oklahoma City, a Gargantuan commercial structure that can be seen from parts of north Norman nearly 25 miles away. It was finished in 2012 nearly 3 years later.
This skyscraper is abnormal in its design for the reason that has a triangular footprint instead of the expected cubed glass monolith we've come to expect from newer skyscrapers. This triangular shape allows for interesting view of the tower from any angle surrounding it and with the reflective glass exterior sometimes seems to fade into the sky. The subtle bends along the height make a distinct profile capped with a diamond shape at the top of each facing side.
As can be seen it clearly towers over the downtown skyline at over 800 feet tall. It can be quite inspiring to see in the distance; however, if you find yourself running the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon then the sight of the Devon Tower can be soul crushing.
The purpose of the Oklahoma City Marathon is that:
"You run to remember the victims of April 19, 1995.
You run to honor the survivors.
You run to never forget.
And you run to ensure the future of the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum."(okcmarathon.com/get-involved/)
As such the marathon begins in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City near the Memorial and ends a block away; but first you have to run north until you get to Lake Hefner and reach mile 13. It's here that you begin to head south, facing the Devon Tower which will continue to mock you in the distance until at last you finally make it the full 26.2 miles near to the base of the tower. Soul-cruuushiiiing...
