Eldridge - Blog 3

St. Mary's Church, Helena, AK

This is my first blog on Charles and Ray Eames. They were a husband/wife architect duo. St. Mary's Church in Helena, AK was built in 1934 by Charles Eames and Robert Walsh. This was before Charles met and married Ray.

The front of the church looks boring. While the entrance looks okay, the huge empty wall above it reminds me of the huge brick walls one would see in the inner city. The side of the building looks a little better.

The side looks a lot more like a traditional church with the large steeple and tall windows. The traditional cross building shape can be made out from this angle. Overall the design is pedestrian and not very impressive compared to other churches I have seen. The small entrance seen on the bottom left of the picture doesn't look like it matches the rest of building. It just sticks out and not in a pleasant way. Hopefully the rest of their work is a little more inspiring.
