For the last of my blogs on Austrian architecture, I want to conclude with the Austrian National Library. Originally built in the 18th Century, the wing pictured above was built in the 1860s under Kaiser Franz Josef. Combined with the massive expansion of the University of Vienna, the National Library represented a bold statement that Austria had arrived as a cultural and scientific power.
