House for All Seasons
A self-sufficient and multi-functional village house was designed by a Chinese architect John Lin. The house was built to encourage rural Chinese residents to be less dependent on outside resources. Similar to traditional rural homes, the walls were mud insulated with concrete frames; however, earthquake resistance had been put into the structure. The inside of the house included an underground pig pen and a biogas boiler generated by animal waste, wide staircase for planting crops, and a roof that can also be used to collect rain water. I feel we often take our modern conveniences for granted, but homes in many parts of the world still need these simple creations just to survive through the changing seasons.
