The Sankore Madrasah was completed around 1330 (though a similar building had served as a mosque since 989), and it served as a major center of learning for the Empire of Mali. The building is constructed of baked earth interspersed with wooden support beams, and is built to partially resemble the Ka'bah. While not monumental, the building still seems palatial with its towers and walls. These were likely meant to protect both scholars and books held within.
