Earthships - Michael Reynolds
The Earthship is a building type that is ultra environmentally centered. The building is made out of local and recycled materials and is also intended to be able to function off of the grid. The energy to power the house is collected in several fashions including passive solar and wind turbines. I really like the idea of decentralized energy production. In concept I guess several of these houses could make a community and then they could have a shared power bank. Essentially they would replace the demand for electrical companies by having each house provide for themselves plus a little surplus so that their community wouldn't have issues during heavy loads. These types of houses are also ideal for being self-sufficient, not needing public infrastructure. I would definitely calculate long terms benefits associated with making up for the large initial cost for a building such as this, before buying. In regards to aesthetics, I don't think this picture does the building justice. The ground around the building really detracts from the positive features of the structure. My favorite part of the building's appearance is the sleek looking windows on the side.
