Vietnamese Refugee Camp
This is one of the buildings in the Vietnamese Refugee Camp in Galang Island, Batam. During and after the civil war in Vietnam, Vietnamese refugees known as the boat people fled the country and inhabited here. In 1979, this camp had facilitated about 250,000 refugees from Vietnam and was closed in 1995. My family did not flee during the war; however, it was a tragic time for my family and the innocent people of Vietnam.
